i know we depend on about a third of our food from bees, due to the fact that they pollinate. they really are necessary as part of the food cycle.

It estimated Bee pollination is responsible for around 30% of our food supply.

So would humans become extinct without bees? No.

There is no question however that the loss of bees would have far reaching consequences for ourselves and to the ecosystem:

For example it would lead to higher rates of famine and economic troubles for the more immediate consequences, as well as cause a myriad of other problems through a ripple effect since many animals, insects, plants and other organisms benefit from bees (ultimately this would have an additional long term negative impact on humans).

So while humans can survive without bees, the short term and long term consequences of their loss would be substantial.

This is a made-up quote, attributed for some reason to Einstein. Of course Einstein was a physicist, not a biologist, so it's a mystery why anyone would think he would make pronouncements about bees, or why we should listen if he did.

However, it is true that if bees died out humans would have problems. But I doubt very much we would be extinct within seven years. Many of our most important crops are not insect-pollinated - for example wheat and rice are wind-pollinated so do not require bees.

This is a quote attributed to Albert Einstein, and it's 3 years not 7.
Most of the people below have the right idea. pollination of many of our crops depend on the bee population and other what are called pollinators.
Recently the bee population has fallen off more than 50%.
Now, understand that most of these bees are not naturally occuring colonies of bees. they are domesticated bees kept by bee farmers around the world.
About 80% of our crops are pollinated by these domesticated bees and they are shipped and trucked all over the world to pollinate crops.
No one has yet figured out why the bees are dying but if Einstein what correctthen............................

If bees became extinct there would be a lot fewer food sources in the world, this would cause food shortages all over the world and mass starvation. Bees produce almost all fruits and vegetables that need to be pollinated, with out them there would be very few fruits and vegetables to eat!!!!

Hi
Did you know that Bees are very interesting and important creatures. They aren't just a pest that stings us once in a while or sends some people waving their arms in the air and screaming.

If all the bees died, there would be no more plant life as we know it. Bees have to pollinate plants in order for them to reproduce. That’s why we have the phrase “busy as a bee.” They’ve got a lot to do. So if all plant life died, then any animal or creature which relied on plants as their source of food would die. Meat eatting animals would clear up the dead but soon be left with nothing to eat and they too would die. Then there goes OUR food chain. We'd have no fruit, veg or meat to eat so eventually we too would die.

there would be less food to eat with out bees like corn as bee play a part in pollinating the plant. Also honey of course would not exsisted.

Some people who work with bee or with produces made by bees would not have work.

I don't know about becoming extinct in 7 years, but because bees cross-pollinate so many fruit and vegetable plants, they play a vital role in food production all over the world.

Hi,

It is actually more like 6 years.

We rely on bees to pollinate so many crops that without them we would run out of food.

Pollination = reproducing = feeding us = feeding live stock
= feeding us.

I don't know how it supposed to affect fishing and sea foods but it must do somehow least they would not be able to make such a prediction.

It could be that without plant life on earth the rain cycle would break down and the seas would dry up.

most of the food that humans rely on is pollinated by domesticated honey bees. If they died out, there would be a food shortage across the world that no nation could avoid.
most of the food crops in the world are pollinated by bees.

Bees pollinate all kinds of plants. Without them, most forms of plants wouldn't be able to reproduce. I don't know about the whole '7 years' bit, but it would be a disaster.
