Hmm I agree but Carlos Guillen is the best shortstop in the game, well offensively at least, he's pretty bad on defense.
And there will ALWAYS be players left off the team that deserve to be there. What I think they should do is add a few honorary spots for the players on bad teams that don't have a chance of making it to the world series and only let those players on the best teams play in the game. That way these guys can still be "all-stars" but they just don't get to play. lol I know it sounds rude but come on the winner of the all-star game (home field in World Series) means nothing to guys like Gil Meche, Brian Roberts, and Freddy Sanchez who play on garbage teams.
And Erik Bedard was the biggest snub. Plus Michael Young does not deserve to be on the team, yes he's a great player but he's not having a great season.

There are always going to be snubs--it's unavoidable when you have the fans voting. I consider myself a very well-informed fan, but I can't keep track of every single player in each league.
For instance, I know that Eric Byrnes and Matt Holliday are having tremendous seasons and should be starting, but Bonds, Griffey, and Beltran have been voted as the starters. It's not necessarily a vote for the best players as it is a vote for the most popular.
And, Msi_cord, I have a question for you: although Ortiz is a DH, and just because the game is in an NL ballpark, can you honestly make a case for leaving him OFF the team?

Everyone should vote for Bonderman of the Tigers to get that last spot on all star team. He is 9-1 with his first 5 starts being ND, 3 of which the Tigers won! And a side note, Kenny Rogers is pitching like an all star in his 2 starts this year. Go Tigers!

There will always be a few that get snubbed. At shortstop, it will be very hard to make it in the AL. Derek Jeter is a great player (I hate the Yankees, but will admit Jeter is talented). Carlos Guillen is definitely deserving as well. I have not seen Young or Cabrera enough to make a legitimate comparison.
My question main question is: How is David Ortiz a first basement when he only plays DH (with the exception of inter-league games in NL ballparks)?

Yes. The problem is that, beyond those voted and and a few other top-tier players, the rest of the roster has to get filled through quotas (i.e., one player from each team and enough to have a backup or two at each position). Given those restrictions, the best you can usually hope for is that nobody is on the team who's blatantly unfit to be there. (Though even that fails sometimes - Mark Redman in '06 and Mike Williams in '04 being obvious examples).

look u can make a point for a few of the guys left out, but you can make a hell of a case for the ones that made it as well. There is not enough room for everyone especially at positions where theres 4 or five legitamate good almost great players out there. It will never be a perfect science and if it was we would have nothing to debate or argue about, who would want that

While Cabrera is a good SS, he is far from the best shortstop in the game, here's shortstops better than him to name a few:
Jose Reyes
Derek Jeter
Jimmy Rollins
Michael Young
Hanley Ramirez
Miguel Tejada
Edgar Renteria

Thanks to the fans, they voted for Barry Bonds, who is not a punk, but someone fans (not necessarily Giants fans) realize is performing. Cabrera is a SS and does not have 700+ HR's like Barry or over 10 Gold Gloves like Omar Visquel, so it's up to the fans to vote him in, but maybe they don't like him. The Giants fans are not crying because Omar is not playing in the AS Game, but at least A-Rod got voted in!
