I have a 5 gallon hex tank with a male Mickey Mouse platy, and 2 neon tetras. The male mickey mouse platy was pretty agressive towards other platies when he was in the same tank with them. Now I'm wanting to add a couple more fish to this tank. Any good ideas on any that would get along with what I have in there already? I was considering a Pleco as one for sure.

Allys-"I h8 puting fish in such small tanks, A pleco is way out of reach, Those grow to 1ft long (not joking) and need at least a 50 gallon and bigger when there older, And neon tetras should be kept in schools of 6 or more, those 2 you have are stressed, Get 4 more neon tetra and the tank is full. "
The lady at the pet shop told me neon tetras needed to be in schools of 3 or more. I had 5 but 3 died in the last 4 months. How can you tell if a neon tetra is stressed? They seem happy to me.

I think you might be able to fit one more medium sized fish in your tank. You might want to pick something that is very unique and would really add some flash to your tank like a flourescent colored glass fish. They don't grow very large and are not known to be aggressive.

you should consider one gallon of water per fish (small fish) and that does not include space that plants and decorations take up. If you add anything to taht small of a tank, it might only be able to handle a 2-3 more tetras. Pleco would be good but they grow large.
If your platy was being agressive to the other fish chances are it will do the same to the neons and has not yet because they have been able to out swim it so far. The more fish you add, the less room they have to evade the platy.
Good luck.

The 1 inch per 1 gallon of water is a starter point, but then more needs to be added from that to allow for the girth of the fish and waste production, etc. Platys and tetras stay small, so the 1 inch per 1 gallon could apply to them, thus, the most you can have is 5 inches of small fish at adult size. Platys can get 2-3 inches as adults and the tetras will stay at about an inch. So, at this point, you have about 4 inches of fish. Bottom line, you really can't add anymore fish. One more tetra would be it.

You were kidding about the Pleco, right? Considering the Common Pleco gets 2 feet long, I don't think that would work. Get 2 more Neons and your tank is maxed out. 5 galloms is just a tiny tank. So your fish total would be:
4 Neon Tetras
1 Platty

everyone that says 2 or maybe 3 more neon tetras was right, giving them a school will make them happier and able to fend off aggression
Do not get a pleco or any cleaner for that matter, except maybe a couple ghost shrimp.
Just clean the sides of your glass, with an approved scrubber or scraper and siphon the gravel when you do water changes, you DO do monthly water changes right? right, 1-2 gallons a month. As much as 1 gallon a week would be best, but not much more.
Hope this helps

It sounds like your tank is pretty well stocked already. Generally, in a fresh water tank, you can keep one inch of fish per gallon of water. Most platies are around 2" and neons around 1". You MAY be able to add one more really small fish (like another neon), but I'm not sure that I'd advise it. Most plecs (common ones sold in stores) can get over 6". There are some smaller species of plecs, but even they top out at over 2.5". You may think about getting a larger tank. Then, you could add more variety to your tank.

I would get up to two more other small fish (ie more tetras or platys). Pleco tend to grow really big, and I've had mine try to eat my smaller fish, so I would highly advise not getting one.

For a tank that length Mediterranean geckos, dwelling house geckos, 5 lined skinks, emperor scorpions, flat rock scorpions, crimson knee tarantula, anoles, and so on no longer something that would get very great, like the rain wooded area/ dart frog theory.
