Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O'Neal faced each other in the 1995 Finals, when Olajuwon was already 32yrs old and Shaq was 23 yrs old. Just 2 years later, Olajuwon's play started to show deterioration, while Shaq in 1995 averaged 29.3ppg 11.4rebounds per game and shot 58.3% from the Field. In 2000, when Shaq won his first title with the Lakers, he averaged 29.7ppg, 13.6rpg and shot 57.4% from the field. In short, Shaq was already in his prime when he met Olajuwon in 1995 (when Hakeem was nearing the end of his career), and how did that turn out? Hakeem swept the Magic of Shaquille in 4 games, and Shaq couldn't do anything about it.
Hakeem was more skilled, and definitely better than O'Neal.

I'm a big Shaq fan, but i'd say that the better player is Hakeem. Prior to their head-to-head 1995 finals match-up, Shaq was at his best, leading the league in scoring and was among the leaders in rebounds and blocks. The Magic thought they had it won.
Come the 1995 Finals, Hakeem dropped 30+ points on Shaq 4 straight games enroute to a sweep of the finals. Shaq admittedly has said that he was outplayed by Hakeem.
Come closing stages of the game, Hakeem's team always looked to him to bail them out. Shaq, they had to pull him out and bring him back in as the 2 minute mark left in the game comes as he can't make the free throws if the others did a hack-a-shaq.
All-around, Hakeem had the better game.

(H)akeem and Shaq played in the 95 finals, and Hakeem took Shaq to school. Furthermore I read in a magazine that they asked MJ that question and he as well to Hakeem

shaq has a huge prescence on any team he pays for but akeem is just more talented. Rebounding and putting up shots is a valuable skill of his. Also he does almost every fundamental of the game correct and good.

Hakeem (formerly Akeem) was definitely the better player, his moves were just amazing and pretty to watch. Shaq was pure muscle and could bully and dominate any player he was matched against, just a monster.

hakeem is the more skilled of the two as shaq relies more on his power and atheleticism (when he wasn't overweight). But overall if you look at their value and the impact they have, you have to give the advantage to shaq. hes led his teams to more titles (4 to hakeem's 2) and there isn't another player that is more feared than shaq. teams must change their whole defensive scheme when they face shaq. also he makes his teammates better because he automatically commands a double team every time he touches the ball
