I think the main fear is injury. No one wants to send one of their best players (that is why they are at the All-Star game) to have them get injured in a competition which really means nothing. This what I think the NFL has done right. They put their Pro Bowl after the season is over. Thus a minor injury is not that big of a deal. In baseball, if a player sprains his ankle running the bases, they could miss two weeks of play, which could make or break a team. Maybe there should be some sort of skill competition done in November after the World Series to avoid such injuries.

There used to be other skills competitions.
But then, in 1989, Barry Larkin got injured in one of the contests -- baserunning, I think it was -- and that was that. No one wanted to risk any more players, let alone All-Star caliber players, on mere exhibitions -- not while they are being paid to play in championship season games. (Larkin was out nearly two months, until early September.)
The HR Derby was kept because the injury risk is negligible, it makes for easy television*, and chicks dig the long ball.
* The Derby doesn't necessarily make for GOOD television. It could, but the way it gets totally munged up with interviewettes and commercials and players' families all over foul territory and players with their own vidcams and whatnot, utterly drains any compelling interest it could generate. And it goes on too damn long. It really does need more immediacy and snappier production.

You have some great ideas!! I wish they would do those competitions. Its not just home runs that make someone an all star, and each player should have a showcase for their strengths. OK, I wasnt thinking of the injury factor there..Maybe they could do the throwing for accuracy contest though? I think someone could get injured trying to hit so many longballs too though. Maybe they should just eliminate that too.

The homerun derby is an event for the fans in addition to the game itself. I really believe that is enough unless they want to turn it into a carnival.

No, I think it's just right, you don't need these high priced "stars" getting injured for the sake of exhibition, it's why the NFL does not do more.
