I've done it many times.
Depends on the model, but most of them have an excessive number of screws of varying sizes (more than lets say a toshiba, or Dell).
If the laptop is over 3 years old, don't waste your time or money.
I am a firm believer in getting all the life out of a machine I can, but when it comes to emachines and gateway, I consider them disposable (from industry experience).
The only exception I have to the above advice is... if the replacement parts are free or less than $25, I would spend the time to repair it.
What makes you think you need to replace the motherboard? Is it a DC powertap issue by chance? They can be replaced quite cheaply if you do the labor and can solder.
If it is a DC powertap issue, email me back.
Best of success

Virtually impossible.
Have Gateway ( they bought eMachines) repair it or replace the laptop.
