I do know that it is without a jury(duh), but what is a merits trial?

It basically means that the divorce does not merit a jury to hear the divorce but it will need a judge to preside over the proceedings.

I would presume that there was a preliminary hearing held to see if a jury was warranted but then the evidence (testimonies) found did not merit a jury.
