The answer lies in the warmer than normal waters that are surrounding our coasts at present. A look at the sea surface temperature anomaly chart shows the warmer water in the eastern Atlantic. However, warm water alone cannot bring so much rainfall, what you need is the upper atmosphere to play ball too, and that is what has been happening.

Around June 9th A 'pool' of cold air became trapped in mid-Atlantic. Now, for cloud and rain to form you need upward motion; the greater the difference in temperature between lower and upper levels of the atmosphere (we call it the 'lapse rate', the higher the risk of cloud and therefore rain forming. This 'pool' of cold air has been slipping eastwards, and as areas of it have broken off and entered the warmer water around the UK coasts, upward motions have been enhanced. As this air is raised upwards and removed from the surface, so other air arrives from the surrounding area to fill the hole left by the rising air. Pressure falls quickly and distinct areas of low pressure form.

This areas of low pressure have been passing through the country, producing some exceptional rainfall totals, today being no exception. I have recorded over 6 inches of rain already at my station in Wombourne, South Staffordshire and with more rain on the way I am expecting a very wet June.

The problem we now have is that history shows that once this situation gets established, it's very hard to change. I think that we may well see the unsettled weather for much of July, although do expect an improvement through August.

For now, brace yourself for more rain, and if you're an umbrella manufacturer, can I buy some shares?

Where u from Chrissie? I'm in Manchester, UK, and it has been raining for days and days! I've posted similar Q's, and it seems a lot of places are experiencing floods and storms, all over the world, and the only explanation I can see is it's due to global warming.

Because the whole British Island should be a prison. They should shift all the prisoners from whole world here. This truly must be the only place with worst weather on the planet with so many people living here(voluntarily). Wake up people go south! (By the way even north is better than England's weather)

Every time there is a lauch of a space craft into outer space, there follows a period of very unusual weather. If you don't believe it, go back and check it out. The space craft breaks through the gravitational atmosphere and this effects our weather. Is it really worth it ---I mean we don't get anything positive for the money spent on these travels and the world suffers the consequences. The money could easily be spent taking care of our elderly who are unable to take care of themselves or something similar.

The Gods are angry with us, quick down on your knees and pray.
You could try a burnt offering but you might have trouble lighting the fire lol.

We had our Summer in April, we are going to have snow in October until December then it will be Spring again in January.
The seasons are moving?

An old lady by me says it is globular warning,

She also reckons it can only get worse with all them Yankee & Russian space ships making holes in the sky, and with the Chinese starting up as well it'll cause havoc.

It's because that "Umberella" song is number 1 in the charts. The weather was great in the weeks before, but has been lousy ever since.
