My opinion is that if someone makes an error in judgement it doesn't make them look strong by standing behind it when the facts prove them wrong. Things change and people need to adapt. The facts they were presented with in the first place may have changed. I believe the best leaders have that ability to adapt. It's not "waffling" it's just common sense.

This is a politically neutral question. I am not bashing one party or the other because they both do it.

Politicians hardly ever admit they make a mistake.
Instead they blame somebody else for their error.

It depends on the issue in question and the possible adverse reactions. I think in most cases, the offender usually believes that he/she is right and that given time the situation will change and their first decision wil prove to be the correct one. Plenty of politicians DO admit their wrongs.

Only a fool would stand behind a decision that they have later determined to be wrong. Circumstances change, and thus so do our reactions to the matter. It may not even be a matter of being "wrong", as new information is gained some decisions must be reviewed.

I have been asked by Fasc-fiter to forward the following statement to you. Fasc-fiter says:

"I thoroughly agree with what you are saying. So earlier this afternoon I posted a comment saying 'I find it sad that this question even needs to be asked'. It was deleted. Apparently the site censors misunderstood this to be a comment critical of the question itself-- which should itself be fair game-- but in fact, it is a supportive statement. The question needs to be asked. And it is sad that it needs to be asked. In a sane country of course a leader would change course when a policy fails, but that is not what we have seen from the Bush Administration.
I regret that my subtle and terse comment was so badlly misconstrued, and have protested its deletion.
I hope this clears things up."

Politicians are just like any other adult: when you're wrong, you're wrong. Admit it and change.
