It's a satire on the romance novel. Nonetheless, it getting so close to criticizing the silliness of action adventure romances, it comes off as both sweet and comedic in the end. The movie is fantastic, one of my favorite films of all time.

I believe that it illustrates the old adage that "Love conquors all." The love of a woman and a man, the fellowship of men with each other, etc.
That in the end, good things happen to good people.
Of course, The Princess Bride, while a great short story, is, after all, a fantasy.

The concept I perceive is that a masked person is not necessarily evil, for the other villains were all unmasked. But truth and inner belief can change even some evil people to do the right thing. the rescue of the princess describe the pursuit of righteousness and succeeding in that effort.

The author of the book said it best for the main idea of the book version book version, life is not fair.
The film is a little more complex in its main theme since it takes the story of the grandfather reading to his grandson when he is under the weather, the story of the pricess bide is an adjunct to this. I believe the main idea of the filnm version is love, but not just one type but many.
