I just built a new computer and had some issues doing so, so I didn't set up RAID Iike I wanted to. Windows XP's preinstaller only recognized 127gb out of the 250gb on each HD. So I figured trying to get RAID working at that point wasn't a good idea. I installed SP2, and it sees my 250gb now, but I had to put the space beyond 127gb on a new partition. So, I have 4 partitions, which is really annoying. Anyway, I'd like to get RAID 1 going. My motherboard (ABIT IP35 Pro Snake) has a built-in SATA RAID controller. When I set this up am I going to have to wipe my HD's and reinstall Windows? Will I run into the same problem of it only recognizing up to 127gb? Any advice is appreciated as this will be my first time trying to set up RAID. Please don't advise me to install Vista by the way, I'm not considering that as an option at this point. Thank you!

Guys... thanks for the replies, but if the motherboard instructions had that information I wouldn't be asking this question. All they told me is how to make the disk to get it started, nothing about what would happen after that. Also, I wasn't asking if I should set up RAID, I was asking how it'll happen since I have already made the decision to do it. Sorry, I don't mean to sound rude but I'm looking for answers that answer the questions I've asked. Thank again, I do appreciate the time you've taken to reply.

Read the instruction that came with the mobo, they will tell you all you need to know!

You were using RAID 0 which didn't offer any fault tolerance as you saw when you broke it. The only advantage is some speed improvement. Now the you don't say whether this is a hardware RAID or a software RAID (yes there is a difference). If it is hardware then it is set up prior to bootup whereas software it is setup under Disk Management.

! You will need to reinstall windows!

1. You need to update the bios. Set the mode of the controller in the BIOS to RAID

2. Use the RAID bios to create the RAID. watch during boot when the prompt comes up you must go into the RAID setup.

3. You must load the drivers for the raid WHILE you install.
Make a driver disk from the downloads on the website

4. Start the installation press f6 and load the driver for the raid

Patch the system to the current level using windows update.

"Windows XP's pre-installer only recognized 127gb out of the 250gb on each HD" - wise decision. It could be anything including BIOS Firmware issues.

RAID for home use is illogical, IMHO. You'd be better to use the second drive as an internal Slave for backups. Then, your other questions are moot.

P.S. Don't install Vista yet, wait for SP1 at least.

just blow the mbr and set it back up 50gig loss of data means you setup the drive wrong
