Almost all his books are excellent and you can't go wrong. The better ones are IT (seems like almost everyone is recommending this one), The Stand, Carrie, Pet Semetary, 'Salem's Lot, Insomnia, The Dark Tower is incredible, etc etc. Also, try reading any by Richard Bachman (Stephen King's alter ego) they're very good and some tie in with the Stephen King books. What you'll find through all the books is characters pop up from different books, so it's like one big King universe with lots of friends in it that you keep bumping into. Can be slightly unnerving sometimes though.

That's quite hard, I think. Try The Shining, which, as you probably know, was made into a movie with Jack Nicholson...it's a sort of exploration of his descent into madness. There's also a collection of 4 or 5 novellas called Different Seasons, including the story of Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me, both made into pretty successful movies also. But if I were you, I'd check out some of his short stories, the first ones I ever read of his were Skeleton Crew and Night Shift. These are great to begin with - shorter examples of his work, so you can decide after reading if you want to further explore his other, lengthier stuff. Good luck with the search, hope this helps a little.

IT
Christine
Carrie
The Shining
The Stand
Cujo
The Dark Tower series
The Shawshank Redemption
Needful Things
This list goes on and on - but you really can't go wrong with a Stephen King book - just pick one and enjoy!

The Gunslinger set is amazing! Loved every one!
But to start off on I would say either The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption or Cujo (That was brilliant!:D) Go! Go now! Buy any & all of Stephen Kings books. He is wonderful! But if you're going to be just starting don't start on his new one Liseys Story. It's very hard to get into!

Salem's Lot and The Shining are his best.
Specially The Shining.
But always, its first 70to100 pages are so boring... It worth go through and survive this first test before dive deep within his ideas.
I would advice Exorcist and Bram Stocker's Dracula. Really nice within this category. Hound of the Baskervilles - Sherlock Holmes - is pretty interesting and any book from Edgar Alan Poe as well.
If you are looking for a wider range and not only Terror segment, I'd adice:
Robert Lundlum (Bourne Supremacy)
Frederick Forsyth (The day of the Jackal)
John Grismam (The Firm)
Christian Jacq (Ramses 5 books)
I did not like Enterview with the vampire (Anne Rice), but there are a lot of guys that love it.
It worths your tiem reading.

If you want to really spend a long time reading, then the Dark Tower series is good, but the best stand-alone book that I've read by Stephen King is 'Cell'.

Well I have to say that I am a big fan of SK too and the books mentioned are good.
I would suggest you start with Misery.
This is the story of an author who has a car smash and gets rescued by a mad nurse who keeps him in a room on a remote farm.
Some of the scenes are horrific but with it all SK's mad sense of humour comes through.
The horrific part is that there are no 'spooks and goblins' but the story is entirely plausible. It could happen.
Then you might just be hooked on SK.

If you're willing to start of with a mighty lengthy book, yet one that will leave you fascinated and happy, then go with IT.
Paperback is 1090 pages, but it's worth EVERY. PAGE.
Description: You should know about this one, as it was made into a movie. Movie itself wasn't that great, but it almost followed the book, just cut out the blood and gore and language.
