It's simply geography. Besides, the Brewers were never supposed to be in the NL Central. The Royals were offered the move to the NL Central first after their World Series victory in order to stir up a rivalry with the Cardinals. However, they rejected it (big mistake), and the Brewers instead got the offer and jumped all over it.

Each team plays almost every day. There are 30 teams in MLB. Since the NL teams play AL teams only on rare occassions (called interleague play) and since the two leagues have different rules (DH, for instance), the only possible way to make sure that every team is able to play on any given day is to make one league have 14 teams and the other league have 16 teams. This, of course, means that one division will have more teams than any other and one will have fewer teams than the others.
Why it was chosen specifically for the West division teams I don't know for sure, but my guess is that it has to do with money. West Coast teams are generally newer to baseball than East Coast teams. The rivalries aren't as long-standing as, say, the Red Sox vs. Yankees or the Cubs vs. Cardinals are, and they didn't want to mess with those money-making series. This allowed MLB to have more working room with those divisions, and the teams west of the Rockies were going to be the West division teams. It just became a matter of deciding which teams went to which league.

my God. a question asked everyday
during the mid 90s when the D-Backs and D-Rays were introduced, one was an AL and one was an NL. this brought the problem of: 15 AL teams and 15 NL teams, which woulda meant someone would be playing Interleague everyday
so the Brewers (i still dont know the agreement, bargaing, etc that went on) moved from the AL to the NL
making 6 NL Central teams and only 4 AL West teams!!

When Milwaukee switched from AL to the NL, it screwed up the divisions.
They should move Arizona to the AL West, and move Houston to the NL West. That would balance things out.
However, you might have heard the rumors that teh Marlins might move out of South Florida to Portland, OR. That would put 5 teams in the AL West. Then maybe put Pittsburgh in the NL East.

The NL has 16 teams and the AL has 14. This is done to balance the schedule and make sure everyone has someone to play within their league without causing a scheduling nightmare. This would mean that one NL division must have six teams and one AL division must have four teams. The only ways to eliminate this difference in teams is for the AL to add two teams (won't happen) or the NL to eliminate two teams (won't happen).

Because who would you move? A lot of it is based on division travel. You can't really put any other team in the West because traveling would be unfair.
This is one reason why the Wildcard is so important these days.
And swingman is also correct. That's why during interleague play two teams from NL have to play each other.

The leagues are not balanced at this time. the NL has 16 teams and the AL has 14. When there is expansion in another five to ten years the AL will get two teams and it will be even.

Frankly, I've always thought that the biggest reason was all the old writers and baseball people who had warm fuzzies about the Braves-Cubs rivalry. The Brewers-White Sox had a GREAT one, but the Brewers-Cubs never materialized (till this year). Just my impression.

because bud selig is a frigging moron!
He might Milwaukee in the NL because it was too close to MInnesota; and he used to own The Brewers--then sold it to his daughter (not sure if she still owns it)
He brought The Seattle Pilots in 1970 ( I think that year) and moved them to Milwaukee.
Between bud selig, donald fehr, and scott boras MLB is going the tubes!!!
