The idea of being "In Love" with the person you marry is recent. Years back families arranged marriages when spouses were thought to benefit the extended family. If they eventually fell in love that was good but it was not a prerequisite. Only with the development of automobile culture did youngsters go out on their own and court each other. The insanity of this idea is evident all around us for families are disfunctional and individuals think only of themselves to the detriment of committde relationships.. However to see a parallel between ourselves and the ancient Romans is misleading since they did not do marriage as we do. Sin is always the same and human nature has not changed so people fail just like always.

I don't know about parallels with Rome. I think the high divorce rate is a result of the increasing value that is being put on individual happiness. People say that if you're not happy with yourself, you'll never be happy with your life. This may be true, but it shouldn't be misinterpreted as saying that your own happiness is more important than anything else in life.
I'm trying to be clear.... It seems that we have lost sight of the fact that our own happiness is contingent on the happiness of others. Marriage involves compromise. As people become more selfish and self-involved, they lose sight of the reasons why they should have to compromise, and not just do exactly what they want.
This leads to divorce, and, ironically, a lot of unhappiness.
That being said, a lot of divorces are just a result of bad marriages and really should end.

Because, like Christmas, marriage has been moved into the commercialized world of brand names so that people wonder if its a union of two like-minded individuals or made possible by David's Bridal and the De Beers Group.

Because people dont take the time to see if they are compatable with the person they are to marry. They rush in because the are in love with the idea of being married. Once they are married and they realize that the person isn't who they though they were marring, they are trapped.
Also, lack of communication plays a big part.
