Do you think that we have overcome the bad upbringing of our parents and have more positive things to offer the world than negative things? Well, for the state of music I'd say that we're in the pits, but we seem to have better values than our parents in some ways.
I'm gonna get a lot of mixed responses from people, but I just want to see what people will say to this question.

The hippies repudiated the materialistic culture of their parents as expressed in the 1950's post war
Eisenhower presidency when communism was thought to be the most destructive influence around. Hippies used drugs as did their parents and as we do to "Turn Off. Turn On. Drop Out". It was a peaceful protest during an era that same mandatory drafting into the military and no clear cut reason for intervening in the nationalist war in Vietnam. Anyone with the slightest sense of history could have seen that what was going on their was an attempt to reunite a country that had been divided by colonial French rule. Why be the last to die for a foolish war. Sounds familiar? The music of the 1960's was refreshing and creative because the introspection made possible by the drug culture. I believe it was far better than what is offered today which seems more like Thug Culture. The emptiness of the culture of the post war Americans is attested by the easy abandonment in the face of the alternative offered and the movement toward a more holistic and spiritually minded philosophy. Big Money interests fought against it then and are continuing to do so now as present day philosophies still counter the prevailing Capitalist current. That is why the radio waves ar filled with"Ditto Heads":people who do not think for themselves but merely parrot the prepackaged opinions of the talk show hosts.

Its all about perpective. I agree that Gen X's music sucks (really very boring for the most part). But then people older than me think my music sucks too (punk/new wave/alternative 1975 - 1985).

Generation X was the product of the "me" generation. That was when all the hippies stopped being hippies and started being yuppies.

I think that you can trace most of society's problems back to the 1960's. In my opinion, it was the single most destructive time in American history!
