MSN stands for Micro Soft Network. Hotmail is a part of this network, but you also have various forums and directories similar to yahoo and other internet providers.

You get it at www.msn.com and (in my experience) it's dumb luck as to whether they'll give you a userid@msn.com or a userid@hotmail.com ... makes no never mind ...

Either way, you'll get access to MSN Live, which is their "suite" of online applications including a word processor, a free website (of sorts), calendaring, "and more!"

It's also handy to have a msn userid because it's an "msn passport" which provides easy access to some Microsoft maintenance functions you may need in the future.

It's all free, so just go to http://www.msn.com and they'll pretty much "beg" you to come on in.
