I was being an idiot and overfilled the oil tank. I've been able to drain out most of the excess to the point that I can get it started, without any smoking, but it will only stay on for 3 mins. or so. When it shuts off I can't get it to start up again. I'm looking for some tips on what else I need to do to get it running smoothly and consistently again. Can you help?

Are you using the correct oil formula? Check your sparkplugs, as they may need to be replaced. See if the choke is working properly also. Be sure you have it on level ground when starting it. Make sure you have plenty of gasoline too. :)

You have to drain the oil to the full mark on the dipstick or you will be getting more oil into the combustion chamber. Check your airfilter, it is probably staturated with oil. If it is paper it will need to be replaced. The excess oil will come up the crankcase breather tube into the airfilter area and go directly into the carburator. Drain all the excess oil out and remove/change the airfilter.

Replace the spark plug, clean the air filter element, or replace it, make sure the vent hole in the gas cap is not plugged with dirt. If all that doesn't work for you, you will need to have the caburetor dismantled and cleaned - a job for a pro.
