Your uterus contracts to force the unused uterine lining out of your body. This lining is the blood that is emitted from your body and the contractions are "cramps". Try taking some midol or ibuprofen for the pain. Sometimes a warm bath or a heating pad makes you feel better.

Ok, some weird answers here...lots of inaccuracies. Ovulation happens a few weeks before the period & some women feel a slight cramping (called middleschmirtz sp). When the egg is not fertilized the uterine lining is expeled a few weeks later. Smooth muscle contractions achieve this goal. This causes some discomfort. If you consider menstruation painful just wait til you give birth.

I suffer from endometriosis, and have quizzed many doctors about this!!!!
The reason is that the muscles in your abdomen and your vaginal muscles are contracting, then releasing, the contracting, then releasing! This goes on over and over.
During your period, according to those in the know, your muscles can contract up to 2000 times a minute! I couldn't believe it when I heard it!!!! Some women feel nothing, others suffer terribly.
Hopefully that sheds some light on your question!!!

The pain is due to, among other things, the opening of the cervix to let the blood out....some women have more pain than others due to this...the cervix muscles' elasticity differ among women....but after the first birth, the pain due to this disappears. This contributes a lot to the pain compared to other things like the riping off of the uterus wall

Most answers are correct. Excuse me while I rant: I believe she's curious about the biological cause not in opinions or your thoughts on taking it out on boyfriends and husbands. When you have a uterus contracting to shed it's membrane and cause you pain, then we'll listen to what you have to say.

Your uterus starts to contract to get rid of the old membrane which grew under the hormones, sometime the contractions are stronger and that is what you feel, the cramps.

It is the smooth muscles of your womb cramping or squeezing. It is most likely a way to make sure that all the womb lining is expelled, but it doesn't half hurt sometimes!
