The Earth makes one revolution every 24 hours. As to how dark it gets depends on the Country you live and the season because the Earth also orbits the sun once a year. At the Arctic circle, say North of Norway it never gets dark in the Summer and there is very little daylight in the Winter. If you live in the Middle East it gets dark at about half an hour after sunset. You can experiment by shining a torch light onto a large ball at night

You might not know it but this is a trick question! A German astronomer in the 1820s named Heinrich Olbers made the observation that there are so many stars in the sky that the light from these stars should make it light at night. He proved this by mathematics, and I've seen his proof but I don't understand math well enough to appreciate it. The question is known as Olbers' Paradox, or the 'dark night sky paradox'.
The commonly accepted answer is that this proves the Big Bang theory. The stars are traveling away from each other so fast that the light is less than it would otherwise be. Some astronomers, though, say that this wouldn't cause it.
Anyway I'm glad, 'cos it would be hard to sleep if it was daylight all the time.

Crikey, have you never watched a sunset. It gradually gets darker when the sun goes.
Wouldn't that be just a little clue to why it is dark at night?
Until I first started visiting Yahoo astronomy answers I never believed that there was such an immense level of ignorance about even the most basic things. It is astonishing that anyone should ask such a question.
I hope you are only 3 years old, or you asked it for a joke.

because that bloke called the sun round and it left us in the dark. Actually its not dark - only when you take a photograph you see it as darkened blackness. Its all fake of course, its never pitch black at any time of the year and nowhere on earth. Humans can clearly see in the dark - though some will say that they cannot. Darkness is actually called night.

Our eyes are only able to perceive radiation at the visible frequencies. some animals are able to see in the infrared range and also in the utltraviolet range.
However we can only see with our eyes if radiation of light enters our eyes.
The reason is that light is an invisible particle.
Since at night the Sun's ray are blocked by the other side of the globe and pass over head and we dont see the rays because there is no other bodies to reflect light except the moon. The night sky would be dark above the atmosphere if there vwere no stars.

All daylight comes from the SUN. When this half of the globe is tilted away from the Sun it is dark, and called night. As the Earth turns the light from the Sun gradually appears, dawn, and gets brighter as the full face of the Sun is presented to this side of the Earth. The globe continues to turn and the light lessens ,dusk, before we no longer face the Sun and it is night again. The Moon is merely reflecting sunlight. It does not create any light of it's own.

The earth revolves on an axis. And let's say you are in Washington DC, like me. Since the earth revolves, and the sun does not, eventually my side of the planet will be facing away from the sun. That's why every nite is slowly get dark because your side of the earth is slowly revolving away from the sun!

because there is no light, our eyes use light to translate objects into images. if no light is present then everything will just show up as dark because the brain has nothing to translate. light bounces off objects and gets into our eyes, this light is translated by the brain into the image we see. the reason space is dark is because no light that has bounced off an object in space can reach our eyes. we do see stars because they are very big and radiate a lot of light.

Ok, everyone knows that Earth revolves. The reason why it's dark at night is because the outer space (stuffs other than stars) doesn't emit fotons (particles of light). it's simple as that. We have daylight cuz we can receive those fotons from the Sun.

That's how it'd be all the time if there was no sun. Because the Earth is revolving, one half is always pointing off into space, and is receiving no light from the sun (other than that reflected off the moon).
