This came about as a result of the fourteenth amendment. The amendment original intent was to help the newly freed slaves obtain the same legal rights as whites. However, there were a myriad of lawsuits brought about by corporations to help obtain these rights. Its hard to believe but its true.

This goes back to the Constitution, which is basically a contract between the governed and the government.
The Constitution recognizes a corporation as an individual, with the same rights and duties as everyone else.

Some people think moral values have nothing to do with profit, but some people think otherwise.

Corporations are not human, but they are made up of humans (stockholders, executive officers, employees, etc.) So - for someone to say that corporations therefore have no 'morals' or 'conscience' is to say that the people who own them, run them or work for them have no moral compass or humanity.
Our Constitution clearly says, 'We the people...' - NOT "We the corporations" or "we the special interest groups" or "we the politicians..." Corporations should have no rights and should be given no value or consideration when it comes to social or political issues. They should be allowed to exist ONLY if they obey the laws established by the people, do business in good conscience, and serve their respective communities. There's more to life than profit. -RKO- 07/02/07

In regards to applicable laws, corporations have been considered people for a very long time. With that said, though, there are many laws and topics that do not apply to corporations. For example, corporations do not have a physical body, so it cannot steal, or commit murder. It does not have a conscience, so it also cannot develop moral values or judgments.

Essentially, they are viewed as people only for tax purposes.
