i am watching the news just now and it showed clips of the terrorists at glasgow being led away, but they had covered up their faces, why? surely if they want the publics help with info about them, the public need to be able to identify them in the first place? what possible good reason is there to hide their identity?

a few reasons, one is that they don't want to influence a line up, and influence a potential jury. If witnesses go to an identity parade, seeing the faces of the men on the telly might influence their selection.
Everyone deserves a fair trial, that is why we live in a democracy. If we start making rules for one section of society, and rules for another, than it descends into chaos, and soon no one will have any rights.

Edit: I would just like to say, after reading some of the other posts, that this is not done only to protect the person, in case they are innocent, but also to protect the public. The law has to be followed very specifically, and if the person is guilty, they could be acquitted due to improper handling of the case. That would not be a good thing, so lets give the police the benefit of the doubt, shall we.

covered their faces so we don't know who they are so extremists can't pull the persons face and post it on the net along with some drivel about what a good Muslim this bloke was. that's my guess anyway.
also so nuts don't know who the person is and try to kill him before any trial

I am thinking that they need a trial first?

As Thomas More did say, cut down all laws to get to the Devil, and you shall have none to protect you when the Devil turns round on you.

because quite frankly people in their right mind wouldnt want to know and we can be suspicious of peoples motives who do want to know...when they go to court people will knoew who they are but the police have their jobs to do and it doesnt help if the media speculate about the identity and familiy and start putting two and two together in front of police investigations...

Because otherwise they can say they didn't have a fair trial due to media publicity, and walk free.
Wake up, the future jury comes from today's public.

This is why the face scarfs asian ladies wear should not be allowed, you cannot always tell if they are male or female, i would'nt be allowed in most shops with a face covering or crash helmet etc! If it were not for terrorists, robbers and the like, it would be fine.
