You just listed several reasons why I held my nose and voted Republican in the last election. If there was a viable third-party with fairly conservative values, I would give serious thought to changing parties.

1. The Democratic party has not been taken over by Michael Moore and Cindy Sheehan. These are just the ones who speak out and continue to be over analyzed by Fox News. The party is made up of millions of moderates that often disagree with the far left.
2. The Republican party pays out millions in handouts to corporations. After wasting billions on the war, how can you complain about the small percentage of that amount needed for various social programs.
3. I didn't see much of a tax cut on my taxes, and I probably won't see much of an increase when they go up. Besides, we have to pay for your war somehow.
4. Most of the Democrats I know are Christians or people of faith. I really don't see a lot of hostility out their in the real world.
5. I can't argue with that. Why do you want to intrude on other people's lives? Let Americans make our own decisions about our own lives and you can feel free to make yours.
My favorite part about this post is the hit on Canada. Everything seems pretty peaceful up there.

Well, then, I'm sure you have five really great reasons to vote for a Republican. Am I wrong?
1. Republicans have been 'taken over' by anti-U.S. right wing propagandists like Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Shawn Hannity and the rest of the conservative-biased media that brainwashes people into believing we're defending ourselves from a 'foreign enemy' in Iraq;
2. Republicans will continue with their runaway military spending to pay for all the handouts they promised their supporters, such as all those government contractors who are also big GOP campaign contributors, and - lest we forget - those two newest corporations with their hands out: the Carlyle Group and Halliburton, both of whom have direct ties to the Bush-Cheney White House;
3. Republicans always cut taxes - particularly for their rich friends who 'need' the tax breaks and incentives. One of the most notable examples is Halliburton, who - after raking in billions in profits as a government contractor to the Iraq war - has the audacity to move its corporate headquarters to the Cayman Islands to avoid paying U.S. taxes;
4. Republicans are hostile to people of non-Christian religious faiths. If you're a white right-wing born-again Christian, you're a wonderful person. But it's a whole different story if you're a devout Muslim, a Hindu, a Buddhist, or - God forbid - an atheist;
5. Republicans are the pro same-sex marriage and no abortion party which will someday soon probably outlaw everything except the 'missionary position' and would expect a rape victim to carry her attacker's child to full term even if it endangers her own life.
The Democrats are far from perfect, but that does not mean people want us to be like RUSSIA: totalitarian government and absolutely no compassion or tolerance for the underprivileged, the sick, the elderly, the hungry, the disadvantaged, the disabled, or the homeless.
When will we start trying to unify our nation instead of continuing to tear it apart with asinine, hate-filled non- comparisons between conservatives and liberals? We're supposed to be a melting pot - a nation that welcomes all people of different cloths, opposite political viewpoints, various religious and sexual persuasions, and a blend of races, cultures and social mores. Too bad we keep pulling at each other because it only creates more division and less unity, which will - eventually - destroy this country. -RKO- 07/02/07

Lots of Catholics vote Democrat. My grandfather was a hard-core, Italian Catholic who was quite conservative socially, but a staunch Democrat. It happens- it has been said that in America there is no such thing as the "Catholic Vote", the way there is a "fundamentalist vote" or a "conservative vote". The reason is because Catholics are very diverse in their political, financial, and social views- more so than other Christian groups. You probably just don't KNOW too many of these moderate or liberal Catholics, but there are MANY. Your views on politics, religion, etc. are your own. You should not attempt to conform them to the ideals of a political party because you think you have to due to religion. Many moderates (and other SANE people) vote based on the issues and not the party lines. It is the only adult way to vote. I'm fairly liberal socially, but fiscally moderate. I'm registered as an Independent, not a Republican OR a Democrat. And I vote for who seems to represent the causes I find important the the views I feel will best serve the constituency involved. I voted for a Republican for my state senate last time, and am proud I did- Senator Alesi was one of the four Republicans to cross party lines to vote in favor of same sex marriage equality in New York. Stay informed through reliable sources (try to avoid 24 hr media and Fox News particularly) and vote your own views, not a Party.

We are not hostile to people of faith. We however don't believe that it should have any place in politics. We are not looking for a socialist country. It amazes me the amount of untruths here. Taxes are going to have to be raised to pay for this disgusting war. And these vets that are coming home mangled and PTSS are going to need alot of help and support. Are you against having your taxes raised for this? As far as Michael Moore and Cindy Sheehan go they are just 2 people. As far as gay marriage and abortion. Once again that is no ones business but the people involved. And if you are one of the Fundamentalist Right sooner or later the swords will be turned into to plowshares. Isn't that correct? I doubt they will gut the mlitary.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion although you are wrong. We still have free speech. For how long under Bush remains to be seen but we do.
1. Dissent and difference of opinion are what democracy thrives on. To see dissenters as somehow unpatriotic is a very Fascist viewpoint.
2. The military base closures etc. were done under Republican led Congresses with Republican and later Democratic Presidents. Funds have never been withdrawn from our fighting forces by Democrats or anyone else. Bush refused to sign a perfectly good funding bill that gave money for the current debacle and so Congress funded the troops anyway but against the will of over 70% of the American people who want them home now.
3. Obviously you prefer to borrow and spend rather than tax and spend. Bush and his policies may just bankrupt this country because of the borrowing. When Clinton left office there was a huge budget surplus and now we have the largest deficit in history.
4. Ridiculous. Many,if not all, liberals are religious people in the same percentages as conservatives. Liberals aren't, however governed by their religion. They believe in separation of church and state. They know that when church and state are one that we have countries like Iran. The liberal doesn't need to go around telling everyone how religious and pious he is because he acts it not just says it yet does other things like many of the cons do.
5. For those who are so called religious. Do you think God hates anyone who is not perfect? Maybe people should be free to make their own decisions rather than the government telling them how to live their lives. Cons complain about govenment always telling them what to do and they want to be able to make their own decisions and yet they want to have the government involved here. Hypocracy thy name is con.
Canada has a military. They fought beside Americans in WW!, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and in the first Gulf war. I suspect there may be some in Iraq now. You need to do research before you make silly assumptions. It makes you look stupid. Are you stupid? What entitlements do Canadians have? Universal health insurance and ?????
Are you wrong.... Oh you bet you are wrong....in spades you are wrong.

1) They are not anti-USA. They would defend us against REAL enemies. Iraq did not attack us. We did not need to attack it.
2) The military wastes money. We do not need weapons designed to fight the Soviet Union. This is just a handout to military contractors.
3) We need to pay for the amount of government we have collectively decided on. What's wrong with that? Raise taxes on the rich (NOT YOU!) to end the deficit.
4) People of religious faith need to be told off when they try to use government as a tool for evangelism.
5) Who cares if gays want to marry? How does it hurt you? As for abortion, no one really wants it on demand. But go ahead and make it illegal-- THAT'll stop it!
What's wrong with Canada? They have a military. Just no Military-Industrial Complex. And they don't have "never ending entitlements". They don't want to run the kind of red ink that Republicans like to!

You are not wrong. A little over the top, but not wrong.
On the other hand, there are probably five equally good reasons not to vote republican.
If either party would field a candidate that actually had some leadership qualities, he or she would get my vote!
