This has been asked and answered many times before...
The egg came first, as there are many organisms which evolved long before chickens did which reproduce using eggs. So, the egg came long before the chicken.

If you like God, then the chicken came first. On the 6th day, God created the animals which included the chicken.
If you like Darwin, then the egg came first. The egg evolved from simpler life forms.
Advocates of creationism and evolution have been fighting over this question for a long time. It is nothing new. So either pick a side or just don't think about it too much. It's hilarious how the people here gets so riled up every time this question is asked. lol

Well, the egg came before the chicken evolved, so there is that....
As far chicken or chicken egg...there is no real answer. YOu could say that the first true chicken had to come from some non-chicken mating. Then the egg would still be the egg of those organisms, but have a chicken inside. So is it a chicken egg?
But then again, evolution happens on the population level, not the individual level....
So you see, you really can't answer that question... but people can certainly have clever answers.

It's not a question that's _supposed_ to be answered literally (despite all the various attempts above). It's a rhetorical device used to call attention to a situation where the speaker is claiming that, between two things being discussed, it is unknown (and possibly irrelevant to the discussion) which of the two things is the cause, and which the effect.
Any attempt to take the question at face value misses the point, entirely.

Well let me answer this in a biblical as well as theological standpoint.
The bible says that before the flood Noah took seven different species of each animal in pairs. Thus they could have been duck, roaster, peafoil, cardinal, Blue Jay, Chickadeee, and eagle. These species while aboard Noahs Arch reproduced into more and intermingled, (evolved) into what is knowns as todays birds. Over time more varieties of species were created from the single existing creatures that God created. Thus the bird may have come before the chicken, as the chicken evolved from the other species that God created.

Well, considering that evolution of species is a millions year process, i think that they appeared at the same time - if you can call it "appeared". Of course, dinosaurs laid eggs, but here we talk about the chicken in particualr, so i think there has to be 2 species of chickens(a hen and a rooster) to produce an egg so they had to appear simultaneously.

The answer is the Theory of Evolution. Chickens descended from a now extinct bird.

A "not quite evolved into chicken" laid and egg and a chicken hatched so it's a chicken. Oh wait, did the pre-chicken lay a chicken egg?

Since the chicken is a hybrid of former generations of dinosaurs themselves mutating due to environment, the dinosaurs being egglayers it is logical to assert that the egg came first.
