The song was written in 1963 by John and Michelle Phillips while they were living in New York. Michelle was homesick for California.
At the time, the Phillipses were members of the folk group The New Journeymen which evolved into The Mamas and the Papas after adding Denny Doherty and Mama Cass Elliott.
They werer signed to Dunhill Records and worked with legendary producer Lou Adler.
California Dreamin' was first recorded by Barry McGuire (Eve of Destruction) on his "This Precious Time" album with the Mamas and Papas providing the backing vocals.
The Mamas and Papas released their own version in 1965. The song reached Number 4 on the pop and stayed in the Top 100 for 17 weeks.
According to Rolling Songs 500 Greatest Songs of All Time the song place number 87.
John Phillips also recorded a solo acoustic version with background vocals sung in Spanish.
The group America (Horse with no name) recorded it on their live album with Dewey Bunnell on lead vocals and Gerry Beckley did the backgrounds.
The Beach Boys have also released two cover versions. One was released on a Radio Shack sampler cassette and a re-recorded version appeared on the CD "Made in The USA."
Bobby Womack had sucess with an R&B version in 1968.
It was the B-Side of José Feliciano's "Light My Fire" single.
The Lettermen recorded a version for their 1969 album I Have Dreamed.
Queen Latifah recorded it in 2004 on The Dana Owens Album.
