The Sound of Music is a love story told within the context of a larger historical story. In the love story, Maria is the protagonist and the Baron, with his rigidity and military discipline, is the antagonist. Historically speaking, the Austrians, including the Baron, are the protagonists and the Germans are the antogonists.

I think because it's a true story (mostly) it depends on how you interpret it. The Nazi's in my opinion are the Antagonists and Maria is the Protagonist. I believe both Maria & the Nazi's stand for a number of things, so again it's just how you interpret the story.

Protagonists are instruments, vocals and everything what produce tones. Antogonists are hum and noise from surrounding, acoustic deviation of the space where is music performed...and some of visitors in the theatre wich is forget to turn off her/his mobile phone (GSM, cell).
