Yes, and a Roman Catholic.
Imagine this:
A high school dropout from Toronto moves to Montreal and spends six years in a homeless shelter. War breaks out and he dodges the Canadian draft to enlist in the U.S. Army. He spends four years in the front lines of the U.S. Army and becomes a corporal when an armistice breaks out. He, and thousands of Yankee disgruntled war veterans, then return to the U.S. amid a raging depression throwning millions into unemployment and starvation.
This guy then becomes a government "V-Agent" investigating anti-government organizations of the newly formed 'ad hoc' government. One radical organization he observes - he then joins; and a year later he becomes its President, and ten years later it becomes the new government party of the entire country.
Under this new political party, this guy leads his adopted nation into a catastrophic war and the entire population is just about annhiliated.
In the 1914-1945 Austria/Germany this guy was known as Adolf Hitler.

Yes he was born in Austria, but most Austrians were German speaking anyways, that is why he 'had tears in his eyes' when Austria was annexed onto Germany and became part of the third Reich. Believe it or not, he might also be part Jewish because his grandmother worked for Jews became pregnant but she wasn't married. So the theory is that she became pregnant by one of the Jewish guys which she worked for. That's why Hitler destroyed that town to destroy any evedence.

Yes, he was. I can't speak for all Austrians, but I remember that Kurt Walheim, a former Nazi, was Secretary general of the UN for 10 years (in the 1970's). Not only was he not apologetic when his past was discovered, but was elected as President of his own country in spite of his record. Those who voted for him obviously thought it was OK.
Then you have Arnold Swarchenegger, whose father was a Nazi policeman, and he seems to be OK with this, too.

Yes, he was born in Braunau am Inn in Northern Austria (close to the German border), although he did effectively renounce his citizenship and joined the German army in the First world war. One of his grandmothers (I think it was his paternal) was Jewish, a fact he tried to hide later in life by destroying her grave.
The Northern Austrian region has always been more German in it's outlook, so I don't think there's much of a guilt complex.

Yes, Hitler was born in western Austria. Austria is, of course, a German country, and in German it means "the eastern kingdom". Before Nazi Germany "united" (in other words, conquered) Austria, the latter was governed by anti-Nazis.

Yes, he was. He was also something like a 1/8th Jewish.
I don't know their perception of him, but I imagine they probably aren't feeling guilty about it, merely because he was Austrian. That's like the United States being ashamed because Charles Manson is an American. I don't think we are.
Just my two cents!!
Cheers!!
