i used to be the pet dept manager at wal mart, and i took care of them for a long time. african cichlids are also agressive fish, depending on your oscar size you will need to buy one that is bigger than its mouth, i also recomend that you go to a fish store in your area that just sells fish. tell him you are looking for agressive fish, agressive fish are the only ones who will get along with oscars because they need to beable to stick up for themsleves, the cichlids do get quite large as well as the oscars, and african cichlids come in a large variety of colors blue, green, orange, yellow....spotted, etc, etc. also cleaner fish who keep to them selves like a larger plocostomus should also do fine. the fish needs to be bigger than the oscars mouth because if the oscar can get it into his mouth it will try to eat it. also how large is your tank, and how many oscars you have will also determine. a 50 gallon tank can hold like 3 oscars and 3 ciclids and a cupple large plocostomus because those fish get really big and need the room to swim around and also the oxygen to breath, anymore fish than that can make the water filled with too much amonia from there fecal matter and take up too much oxygen for the fish to breath.
good luck. there are other species that will go along well with oscars too but i recomend cichlids, but like i said go to your local fish store and take a look at the bigger agressive fish they have, maybe you will find something else you like better.

In a 50 gallon aquarium, that can run out of space in a hurry, especially if you have more then one. I think what's better said here, is what will Oscars allow to stay with them. Space becomes of concern with this fish because of it's levels of aggressiveness. Fish that are big enough to fit in it's mouth it most likely wil try to eat. I think with Oscars, tank mates would be other cichilds that grow to decent size, but then you may have limitation issues in a 50 gallon tank, as well as possible fights down the road. I can only imagine a battle with a full grown Oscar and a Green Terror. Usually your bottom feeders should be safe. I've kept numerous cories with them and they were not harassed, but I also had more space with a 75 gallon set up. My Arowana's were fine being thier length is extreme, but in order to keep an Arowana, it's not going to work out at all in a 50 gallon set up. I'm pushing it as it is with a 180, because their adult size is 48 inches, and my tank lenght is 72 inches, which doesn't allow excess space to move.

Fish like mollies, platties, neons, white clouds, your typical schooling fish are not going to work either. They are just going to become a nice lunch for those Oscars. Plecos will be fine, but that's really putting a load on a 50 gallon tank. Most of your channel cats as well when they become adults will exceed that tank limits. I'd stick with bottom feeders like cats that do not get excessive lenghts, and anything on the top that they cannot get in thier mouth, only nothing comes to mind.

First of all, you don't have any more room considering Oscars get 18 inches long and are in my "Top Messiest Fish" list. Oscars are extremely aggressive and cannot be kept with any other fish (for the most part, but it doesn't matter for you, because you couldn't fit them in your tank anyway.)

Amazing... people are saying to add more Oscars. DON"T, you are at maximum occupancy right now (assuming you only have one Oscar). They are extremely messy, aggressive, and large. No more fish! No Cichlids, no Plecos, no Loaches, NO NOTHING. If you try to add any other fish, your Oscar will just have a nice snack... there is no such thing as a free lunch!

As big cichlids go oscars are fairly mild mannered. They normally behave okay with other largish fish, like tinfoil barbs, large catfish etc. Avoid other big cichlids because they may fight with the oscar over territory. Surprisingly, they also seem to be okay with botia loaches, although I once saw a skunk botia terrorize an oscar... it was like watching a mouse chasing an elephant !
By the way, your tank is not big enough for more than 3 or 4 big fish.

A Red Devil fish. Oscar is Grouchy and bad, and that's how a Red Devil fish is too.
