Why are there 13 stripes and 50 odd stars?

50 stars represent each state. there were 13 original colonies.

History of the American Flag 101. In addition to the 50 stars representing the 50 states (we have gone from 13 colonies represented in the 1st flag to a new flag every time a state was ratified into the union) and the 13 stripes representing the original 13 colonies... here is more info:

"The colors of the pales (the vertical stripes) are those used in the flag of the United States of America; White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valour, and Blue, the color of the Chief (the broad band above the stripes) signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice." The thirteen stripes is a symbol of the 13-original colonies of the United States. The 50 stars represents that at the present time, there are fifty states in America.

13 Stripes represent the original 13 colonies (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia).

50 stars represent the 50 states. A star is added to the flag every time a new state is added to the union.

i aint sure about the stripes it may have somethin to do with succession but the 50 odd stars represent the number of states in the union
