It is a higher gear ratio that will make the engine turn less times for the wheel to make a revolution. The final gear ratio on a transmission is 1::1. On an overdrive transmission it may be something like .87::1. when you do this you can increase mileage but you lose torque multiplicatipion. That is why the transmission will downshift when you accelerate. Most auto transmissions now have overdrive as standard.

over drive is for open road driving to help save on gas,its just an extra gear built in to the transmission, and it reduces the rpm,s of the engine a lot,and this helps any car large or small use less fuel, most cars now days have it,and its very useful in saving on fuel, you can drive it on over drive most of the time, even in town, the transmission knows when to shift in to it,and when not to,but it will save you a few bucks on fuel by using it,good luck with it hope this helps.

Over Drive(O/D) is another gear used to save gas. Say if you are going up on a hill and your car can't get to the top... You have to use Over Drive to get on the top of the hill. It's kind of like another powerful engine working and it's saving gas too.

Is it just me, or is Joseph D's answer completely wrong, seeing as how Overdrive provides LESS torque. Not more torque, which is what you need for climbing a hill...?
