3 feet in one yard. So three yards by three yards by three yards should equal: 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet (3 x 3 x 3): or 27. At least, that is, if the universe has changed the number system on me, once again.

Think of a cubic yard as a box (cube) that has height = 3ft, width = 3ft, depth = 3ft.
The area of the box (cube) = H * D * W
And so, 3*3*3 = 27

if there are 3 feet per yard then there are (3 ft/ 1 yd)^3, which equals (3 feet)^3 per (1 yd)^3, which equals 27 ft^3 per 1 yd^3
Think of it like this... say you have a perfect cube with a volume of 1 yd^3... that is exactly 1 yd by 1 yd by 1 yd... its dimensions also measure 3 ft by 3 ft by 3 ft, because there are 3 ft per yard... multiply those dimensions to find the volume leaves 27 ft^3

basic formula:
1 yard = 3 ft
1 cubic yard = (1yard) * (1yard ) * (1 yard)
= (3 ft) * (3ft) * (3ft)
= 27 (ft * ft * ft)
= 27 cubic feet
