I have a 3.4L V-6 Camaro, when it rains really hard for some reason my car runs a little rough... Im curious as to why my motor would begin to do this... If it rains hard enough my car will actually stop... Any ideas as to why this happens? The rain is hard, there is no water on the road (Not Flooded i mean) Anybody have any ideas?

The usual cause of a motor running funny when it rains or is wet is voltage leaking to ground via an easier way to ground than through the wires and such, across the spark plug electrodes and into ground. This path has lots of resistance and so when the wet weather is around, it will find an easier path to ground. Normal parts of the car prevent this from happening, but due to corrosion or cracked parts it does happen. What you will have to do is start taking plug wires and the coil wire off and inspect them one by one at the connection point to the spark plugs, dist. cap, and the coil tower. What you are looking for is cracked, worn through, or heat melted insulation. Also you need to look at the connection points for signs of corrosion which can be a white color or a black color. If you find this type of a problem, I would suggest a complete set of plug-coil wires as this has always been the weakest link in the secondary ignition system. If corrosion is found on the dist. cap, coil, or spark plugs you should also replace these as you will never get rid of all the corrosion by sanding it off. There also is the chance that your spark plugs have a carbon tracking on the porcelain insulators or cracked insulators. The repair here is replace all plugs and wires. A very thorough inspection or a scope check can find this. If you are unsure, fill a spray bottle with water and mist all these areas and if a spark starts to jump that is where you must look. Good luck.

Two things are required for a motor (any motor) to run: fuel and spark.

Fuel is less susceptible to water than spark. While water in the fuel can cause hard starting and poor idle (rough running), it is unlikely that this problem would only occur during rain.

Spark on the other hand can be very susceptible to water. Things that can cause the loss of spark: Bad connections on spark plug wires, cracked distributor cap, cracked coil, bad spark plug wires, .

Basically, when it rains, water collects on the road (not necessarily flooded) and your tires kick that water up in the air. This can end up in the engine bay and on electrical connections. Also your radiator pulls outside air into the engine compartment as well. If it is raining very hard, the water coming through the radiator may be enough to short out a faulty connection.

So, I would check the ignition system for bad wiring, connections etc.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

You are probably getting water inside the distributor cap - that is about the only explenation I can think of right now.

Try getting a can of wire dry spray.
Take off the distributor cap and spray it inside there, also on the ends of the wires.

Wait till night time, and start the engine - see if you can see little blue sparks, you might need new wires as well.

If the water is getting into the distributor, get a new rubber gasket - it is probably missing or bad.

I work on electronic test equipment for a living, and whenever there is really wet weather, the humidity in the air causes a lot of problems that are not there on dry days.

Your problem (in my opinion) is humidity causing worn out plug wires, dist cap, or coil to short out intermittently.

Your plug wires or distributor may have water getting in.
