The early Dutch settlers in NY refered to the English as "John Cheese" (Jan Kees), sort of like John Doe.

From the song, I guess. And Europeans aren't the only ones who refere to people as Yankees. Europeans look as Americans in general as Yanks. People in the South of the United States call anyone from the North a Yankee. It can be a negative, discriminating term, but I think it has lost most of its derogatory power over the past hundred or so years. It can be used as a fun nickname, too. I live in the South and my friend is from New Jersey so I call her a Yankee all the time and she doesn't mind at all.

As a Texan I once resented being called "yank" by the Brits & Aussies I knew... one just doesn't refer to anyone whose family has lived in the South for nearly 400 yrs as a Yankee.
However I learned to live with it & perfer that to "Colonial." Chuckle, I just called them "Limey" to get even... that got to the Scots. My family came from Ayton, Scotland in the Early 1600s. Long before the Revolutionary war the Brits refered to those born in the US & Canada as Yankees & it may have come from the Dutch calling those from England "Jon Cheese" which sounds very like "Yankees" with the Dutch accent.
Chuckle, I was 13 before I heard Yankee... people I knew always said DAMNYANKEE.

There was a style of ship called a "Yankee clipper" produced in America. American traders were known in England as "Yankee traders" or for short "Yankees". This term stuck and gave rise to "Yankee doodle" and other similar terms.

was not going to reply till I saw this person calling you ignorant hucklebe..It seems he thinks africa is a country ! As the places he names are countries and not continents. He is using the racist cards when he has no clue that africa is also made up of many people ! Afghanistan is in africa and they are predomininatly arabs ....egyptians are a mix of people as well and I have many friends who are white from africa It seems he is racist to me !!! Instead of saying African americans ...why not say Nigerian american or somalian american or Ethiopian american...? Someone here says they use it because they do not know where their ancestors came from ? Well after a while if you don't even know which country and obviously do not practice your culture then just like other whites who can't figure it out either in america your AMERICAN!
