Senators are more likely to be lawyers than Congressmen. These people make up the legislative branch of government, which creates laws. Lawyers study law, so this would be a natural extension of their profession.

I think there are a few reasons:
1) Lawyers tend to have higher incomes so its easier to run.
2) Many go into the law profession because its related to politics.
3) They have better experience debating. I saw this in the recent Governor election in Michigan. The incumbent is a lawyer and she cleaned the clock of the businessman.
4) Societies around the world seem to have a habit of electing lawyers. A good portion of American Presidents, British Prime Ministers, Canadian Prime Ministers, and Australian Prime Ministers have legal training. Right now we are in a historically odd period where only one of those four nations have a lawyer as their leader - PM John Howard in Australia. Canada and Britain have academics while the Americans got a businessman.

This is down to the fact that both lawyers and politicians must be anointed by Satan as fully fledged liars with a little scout badge to prove it.

Because Congress has the responsibility of making laws....therefore...I'd say they know more about the law making process than others.
My problem is that it seems that most are more interested in self serving purpose rather than what's good for the whole nation!
