Socialists prefer a fancy term such as "wealth redistribution", but the end result is the same.

Socialism is the opposite of limited government, which is the premise our country was founded on. Socialism is more government control. The government must control SOME things, but not EVERYTHING... Socialism puts too much control in the government's hands. It has NEVER worked out well for citizens under socialist regime and must never be looked upon lightly as a way to run this country. If Obama wins, my hope is that the checks and balances system will keep him in check and balanced. Socialism must NEVER be considered a good way to run a government. It has ALWAYS been the pathway to absolute power and despotism. No, I am not just repeating words because they sound scary. I like limited government. Please, whomever you vote for, do not make the grand mistake of thinking a socialist government is a good thing. It is NOT.

it is the counter thought to capitalism.. in capitalism you have a free market that sets prices and people can buy/sell bases on that free market. They can also own private property.
In socialism the government controls and regulates the market as well as property, meaning you can not own private property.
Pure capitalism would not work because there would be no protection for the common man. The average buyer would get screwed and no one could stop it.. the system would collapse.
Pure socialism doesn't work because there is no motivation to promote the market and move things forward..there is no incentive so people do as little as they have to.
so (a bit of a tangent here) you need capitalism to drive the market and socialism to make sure it stays fair.
P.S. Red State Randy. Hitler was not a socialist. Germans were actually able to own private property and have private business under him. He was a Nationalist and a loon. Better examples of socialism would be any communist government (although China is starting to incorporate more capitalism, they are still primarily socialist) and a few Democracies from Europe (socialism does not mean communism... communism is a form of government.. socialism is how you deal with the money.. democracies can be socialist and still be a democracy.. though they do seem to run more efficiently for the most part when the scale is tilted to capitalism)

It means putting what is best for society as a whole before what is best for the individual..........Without some form of socialism, civilization would not exist.

Ignore the extremist propaganda by fourthy27, meathead and Dead Marxist. The first respondent provided Wikipedia's definition, that's something to go on.
Basically it's a set of rules for capitalism, so that capitalism doesn't create a small rich elite and a miserably impoverished working class. It's a set of programs for the poor and laws to insure a minimal standard of living for the poorest.

Equal control of resources by all members of society. Each who works to their limit is to share from the common pot what they need and no more. Those who do not perform their tasks are on their own.
Nice theory, works until somebody feels that they are more deserving or "chosen" and take more.

Here ya go!
general term for the political and economic theory that advocates a system of collective or government ownership and management of the means of production and distribution of goods.
Corporatism sounds close to this, only in collusion with the government! This is the Bush world!

"We are socialists, we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance, and we are all determined to destroy this system under all conditions." --Adolf Hitler

"Many of you are well enough off that [President Bush's] tax cuts may have helped you. We're saying that for America to get back on track, we're probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. We're going to have to take things away from you on behalf of the common good."
