Unless the roof was damaged by a storm or vandals, your insurance will not pay for it.
You mentioned something about an inspection. Did you have this house inspected when you purchased it? The fact is, roofs go bad. If you purchased the house and did not have the house inspected and didn't notice the roof needs replaced, nobody can be faulted.
Call some roofers and get some quotes.

The circumstances surrounding the purchase of your house and the leaking of the roof are a little unclear, but I'll take some guesses:
1. You bought the house from a relative?
2. You didn't have a home inspection prior to purchase?
No matter whom you buy a house from, you would be wise to have a thorough home inspection beforehand. Unless a tree fell on the roof since you bought it, or the house was struck by lightning in that time, I'm betting this roof was ancient and/or damaged before you bought it. Based on your description, the condition of the roof may even have been visible to your eye from the ground. Had you known the true condition of the roof, a buyer's home inspection would have allowed you to make an informed decision about buying the house, or not, or to have the previous owner make repairs before the sale closed.
If you bought the house from a relative, unless you can prove the relative knew about the roof damage and withheld the information from you, you have no recourse.
Ditto if you bought it from another individual.
If you bought the house from a builder, your beef is with the builder. Call the company. You have some legal recourse if this is the case.
Be prepared, in almost any case, to pay for replacing the roof. And do it properly. It's a waste of money doing a shoddy job on the cheap, only to have the roof start leaking on you again in a few years.

that is why you need a home inspection, or preferably a full structural survey, before you buy a house. If you had a survey done you might have had some recourse against the surveyor. Did your lawyer not advise you about this at the time?
I think you'll have to stump up for the roof.

Insurance is against accident; not going to cover a leaky roof. If you did not note a problem when you bought it, and if there is no evidence the problem was clearly there when you bought it, the seller is not going to be liable. If you bought a home warranty policy it might be covered; and you could speak with them about it

no one has to get a home inspection, i don't think any state requires it, and if they told u they won't cover it, then u will prob. have to pay or just have a leaky roof, roofs do get wear and tear damage, expeciall in high storm areas, most normall home roofs only have a 20 year life span before something has to be done to them

The repairs are your problem. Any home sales should have a Home Inspection. Insurance only covers accidents. It is not a home maintenance coverage.
