Well - the more petty laws it creates - while ignoring more serious crime reduces everyone's respect for the law that's for sure.

False.

There has been a hardening of attitudes since 7/7 and 9/11 - judges are more likely to press for a custodial sentence rather than a suspended sentence.

Plus there's the usual POW's of the War on Drugs filling prisons up to the seams.

False.

The majority of "minor" offences don't carry the penalty of custodial sentences and for those that do it is very rarely used.

The prisons are not bursting with people who have gone through red lights, caught a fish without a licence or not payed their council tax despite what some might like to make you think.

I just think that prison is no longer a deterrent. It's too easy! I think they should make them get up at 6.am (6 days a week), and do a job from 7.30am to 6pm with an hour off for lunch. That way they will get used to working for a living, and pay for themselves instead of us having to pay for them.

They should still be allowed to study, but in their free time. I had to study for my accountancy exams while holding down a full time job and going to college in the evenings and at weekends.

Maybe that way they will leave prison with a work ethic, and a sense of achievement which will encourage them to carry on working.

I agree totally. Some people are in prison for the most trivial things. Surely the people who are inside for non payment of fines could have the money stopped from their wages or benefits. Then Judges can impose stiffer sentences on Paedophiles, murderers and drug dealers.

the sad thing is that most if not all of these "trivial laws" you so put are not the cause of the rise in jail population. its the fault of people like you blaming the police and law enforcement for arresting people who break laws. you want to sit back and arm chair quarterback all decisions made in the case of law. but i admire the fact that you can sit comfortably by and nit pick at the laws being enforced, thats all laws being enforced.

screw prisons!! I demand executions for any violation caught in the act that is deemed to cause significant harm... prison population would drop real quick... anyone want to go into the occupation of "grave" digger.

Totally! My point exactly which I tell everyone about. ~
Laws being put on the books to get some idiot congressman's name on one, and being enforced by the justice(?) department because it means a paycheck.

Though true what is the alternative. This is the 21 st century and the rule of the day is do as you like and I would do as I like, I and you don't bother for law.
