Also, are cables designed to accommodate such a connection?

Thanx.

Yes. If your motherboard supports them. They'll be fine.

Considering the manner in which you asked your question, the most simple solution is a little hack job.

Since some hard drive enclosures do both SATA and IDE, chances are if you have an external USB enclosure that does both, switching the connection internally from an IDE based DVD player/burner to a SATA drive should work. However, the catch 22 is that if the enclosure is not meant to take a DVD/CD drive, its going to look ugly as you will not be able to put on the intented front plate onto your external drive. This should work with both Linux and Windows.

Take a careful look at the enclosure you decide to purchase. You can do more research at places like yahoo, google products, pricewatch.com or pricegrabber.com. Good luck!

If you meant that you need to litterally connect an IDE DVD to a SATA hard drive, that would not directly work. If you mean to replace a part on a hardware system (such as a system that currently uses a DVD rom like a video game system or a specialize player), assuming the underlying system can be tricked into taking either a hard disk or a DVD rom you might be able to trick it into taking a hard drive instead by using an or vice versa through the use of an adapter. Take a look at this, for example:

Be sure to do your research if this is a hardware hack.

If you simply mean to use both on the same computer, you merely need to adjust the jumpers appropriately. The IDE and SATA should be on separate channels, so you should not need to do any moving of the jumpers if both are available. Other wise, you may need an adapter if you intend to use it internally and you only have one type of connection.

Can you directly connect a SATA drive to an IDE optical drive?

No.

Can you put SATA and IDE drives into a PC and transfer data?

No problem as long as you have SATA and IDE controllers in the system.

yes, make sure the sata disk drive is set to master and the ide dvd writer is set to slave on the primary ide channel. This can be done by changing the jumper settings on the devices. also set the BIOS settings to make sure the computer can look for the devices properly.
