The pay depends on how good of a writer you are. Becoming a writer can be a great career! But you have to know that it's not as easy as it sounds.

Only for those who have true ambition, endless determination and drive...and, oh yeah--genuine talent. For a first time writer, things can be rough. If you don't have the resources backed up or you don't have a spouse or parent or whoever who is willing to support you through the years you have to work to GET to the stage where you can start submitting your work to agents and publishers and contests and magazines and newspapers and so on, then I don't recommend it. I was cocky and thought I'd be published right away, that once I was published money would flow in like rain. I've been targetting editors and agents for almost three years now and I still am not published. I've gotten good reviews from both, but they are so overwhelmed with material because these days--face it--EVERYONE'S a writer. But if you can stick it through the hard times, if you're the kind of person who doesn't give up once you get started, then you could probably be a writer.

Yes and no.

I know several people who are freelance writers for newspapers, and they make decent money. I have friends who make a small residual income from selling short stories. And I know a lot of starving writers who better keep their day jobs.

Writing is a craft. The majority of writers do not make a full time living at it. even if you sell a novel to a publisher, they typical writer will only make between $5,000-$15,000 on the entire deal. Considering how long it takes to write a novel, and how long it takes to find a publisher, you can quickly see this isn't enough money to live on.

Becoming a recognized, published writer who earns a decent living is at best an incredibly long shot. Stephen King once said, for him it was sometimes painful to write, but to not write was agony. If you are real writer, truly devoted, you won't be able to stop yourself.
Beware! Something like 100% of all professional writers are alcoholics.

It’s a good job - if you can get it...

As a novelist typically your income is only 10% of what you publisher gets for selling your book and many time its cost you thousands of dollars for editing an marketing up front. It is extremely rare that a Stephen King or J.K Rowling situation happens.

As mentioned by other answerers here you can also look into freelance or journalism.

If you want to write for a living or even use writing to supplement you income you must look at writing as a BUSINESS. Do your research seriously and thoroughly.

maximum the characters contained in the e book i'm writing suitable now are pupils or instructors through fact it rather is set in a school (that gets teleported to a various planet with the aid of dinosaurs... it rather is complicated), yet we've some janitors and lunch women contained in the blend. 2 different characters are mothers who have been vacationing the school; one's a stay-at-domicile mom who dabbles in mechanics, and the different, who deposes the school's drug lord and turns into the hot drug... woman? i don't recognize yet, yet maaaybe she replaced right into a firefighter in the international. Plus, there's a sub who replaced right into a former military nurse or soldier (a guy). purely approximately all the characters handle new jobs after the school's teleported - they play new roles contained in the society of survivors that types. enormously plenty all and sundry pitches in and hefts some sort of duty; all and sundry has a skill, too. So there are people who catalog powers and handle those with particular powers to clean up issues; medics who're consistently on call; representatives of regiments of persons; gang leaders and individuals; drug lord grunts and drug harvesters; navigators; chefs, furnish gatherers, and furnish distributors; mechanics; ambassadors to foreign places species; and yeah.
