The rest is being used by your on-board graphics card.

It is likely that your computer has onboard graphics. This means that insead of a dedicated graphics card, the graphics hardware is integrated onto the motherboard and the computer has to share some of its main memory to the graphics subsystem. It would appear that 256Mb of your RAM is being allocated to shared graphics memory.

You can probably reduce this amount in the BIOS settings and depending on your chosen screen resolution should be able to take it down to 64Mb.

Your motherboard may only see up to 767MB of RAM. How old is your system? Are the Memory modules seated in the brackets properly? Have you tried taken them out and then switching their locations? What does the BIOS screen say? Try using CPUZ (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php) as that will tell you information about your computer hardware.

Because your PC has built-in graphics and the missing RAM is used for displaying graphics.

The rest of it is set to be used for your video subsystem.
