Dan Brown, hands down.
His books read like action movies from the 90's, all flair and no depth.
Besides, didn't he basically "borrow" and embellish on the ideas posited in _Holy Blood, Holy Grail_?
The one saving grace to his work is making those ideas accessible to the general public...

No such thing. Truly good and significant literature stands the test of time, therefore it is impossible (and terribly arrogant) to say that this or that writer is overrated before time has its say.
Someone mentioned Tolkien, which is just sad (might as well say that Snorri Sturluson was overrated, or Homer). Rowling? She has only two marks against her 1) Her writings are too young to be accurately judged and 2) she is popular (there is no worse crime to the elitist than to be popular).
If a writer is overrated, they'll pass out of remembrance. The only answers you'll get naming a writer will be from those unfit to pass judgment.

christopher paolini (so-called author of Eragon, Eldest, etc.) is the most overrated. not only are his works not very good (or original), but the first book was made into a movie almost immediately after his series became popular. sadly, the primary reason for his popularity is his young age and inexperience which yielded very shallow (but readable) fiction.

I'd have to agree with all of the above (except Tom Clancy, I kinda like his early stuff), but I would add Clive Cussler, Thomas Harris and Danielle Steele to the list.

Nicholas Sparks. His stories are sweet (The Notebook, for example) but his writing style is kind of elementary. 7th graders can read and understand his books, but they're targeted for young adult women. The books just aren't challenging at all, but he's a best seller.
