I feel plenty of things when I put up with misfortune, but I don't see where "sorry" enters the equation.

I think feeling sorry for yourself means that you do feel sorry for what you are going through and the feelings you are having. It's a pity party and we all have them and I think it's ok sometimes to let those feelings out. I understand your point though. The word "sorry" doesn't really fit does it? I didn't make these bad thing happen to myself. I guess it's another phrase that has been handed down generation to generation.

some (not all, just some) black people blame everything bad thing that happens to them on their race. Its raining becuase i am black. I got a parking ticket because i am black. I stubbed my toe because i am black. etc.

when you feel like you are the victim and you wait for people to come pick you up and you feel like u deserve more...ect.
thats feeling sry for urself.
