Well, years ago (1993) I bought a computer and it was a DTK 386. Right now, the computer has Win 95 BUT, sometimes the screen will go red, and sometimes you can still see everything through the red screen. And sometimes you have to knock a few times for it to go back to normal. Why is this happening?

Since it is very old, I am not looking forward to fix it, but it would be nice to at least know what it is

This is a failure of either:
1. The video card or system board of the computer.
2. The monitor itself is failing.
3. The video cable is loose or the pins of the connector are corroded.

Try instead of tapping :
1. Unplug the monitor from the computer and replug in a few times.
2. ! TURN OFF THE COMPUTER ! open the computer and verify that the video card is plugged in to the main board socket correctly. (remove it and reinsert. it)

Come back if more help is needed.

Regards,
James

The red electron gun in the CRT is on the fritz.

If whacking on the back of the case fixes it then it mat be the video card has a loose joint on it or is not sitting on the back of the CRT properly. Or it may be something inside the CRT itself.

14 years is pretty long time for a monitor. I would start looking for holiday deals on a nice new flat panel. (You may want to consider a new PC too. Win 95 on a 386? Anything today is going to seem way faster.)
