I want to find a job in a particular city/surrounding area. I want to send my resume to companies that might have openings - whether they have postings on job sites or not. Where can I find listings of companies and their descriptions by geographic location? Thank you.

For a listing of Corporations, try Fortune Magazine, Money Magazine, and others (they are also on the web, of course).
For jobs in specific areas, try monster.com and all those others; try the state unemployment offices; try listings for those cities/municipalities. Once you find listings for jobs, you can cross-reference it to find out about the companies, etc.

Im pretty sure monster.com will sort by area as will the NY times. You should really focus in on getting exactly what you want though. Just sending our your resume to everyone available, might not be the best answer. You're more likely to get a better and more enjoyable job by focusing your efforts on finding out where you will fit in, and what your wants are. Research the companys that pop up in a general monster search, contact their hiring departments, find out what their looking for and take time to really prepare yourself. By the time you get to interview time - if you show passion and knowledge for a company, youll have no problem landing a good job.
