As a person in highschool, I can't fit in because I am so hardcore classic rock. I don't really like new music though I have tried. No one even knows most of my favorites (Stevie Nicks fanatic here!). Is there anyone else who has experience with this or any suggestions on how to not be so extreme?

When i was at school, i got slagged off for listening to rock and metal. Plus i had long hair at the time which i guess screamed "ROCKER". In the end i just ignored them.

You should listen to whatever music YOU like and forget about what others think. Your real friends won't care (or at least they shouldn't care) about what you listen to.

My music taste is sooo different from all the other people in high school. I listen to oldies, metal, classics from the 40s and 50s, classical, opera, country, almost everything! People don't quite like my taste in music, but when I expose it to newbies, they actually tend to like it. People shouldn't just like you based on your music taste. Real friends will love you for who you are. :) Keep on listening to what you're listening to and embrace the joy of being different...away from the typical rap and hiphop you hear on the radios these days. Classic rock is MUCH better.

You don't have to be friends just based on music interests. I am interested in rock (classic, too) and my friends listen to rap and pop and alotta other stuff.

You could also try and listen to modern day rock bands like Nickelback and Everclear, see if you like 'em. There are a lot of people in high school who like rock, so you'll stand out less. If it turns out you think it's crap, just stick with your music. Try and see if your friends can like it too.

I've experienced it. I just didn't worry about it. There is more to you than what music you listen to. If you don't fit in because of the music you listen to, then concentrate on other characteristics that DO make you fit in. On the whole, you are probably not as different from others as you think. Don't limit how you define yourself!
