One probelm could be with invald registry entries for previous updates before you repaired.
I really recommend that you get ccleaner run it to clean up your system. Use the Advanced features in the main lceaner part and check off all options.
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Then use the registry cleaner part (light-blue Rubik's cube looking button) and run it a few times until you don't get any errors.
After that, try the updates again.

I've had something like this on a legit install of WinXP.
Make sure the encryption services are running. Seek the Microsoft KB about this. If there is a problem with this component - any problem - Win Update will fail.

You need to have the Microsoft seal of approval which is called WGA. Windows Genuine Advantage tool.
Windows needs to download an ActiveX component which sends details of your processor and hard drive serial numbers to Microsoft. Once they are happy that you have a genuine copy of Windows then they will let you install the updates.

When did this start happening? Go to system restore and restore your system to a point about a week before this started happening. Then try running updates again.
You may also have a virus, so run a free virus scan. Most large virus software companies allow you to scan for free. Just search on download.com or google.

There could be a few reasons for this, and not necessarily related to whether you have a legit copy or not ,try
www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm and go to the W page then scroll down to "windows update problem" and try the suggestions.

you have an illegal copy of windows XP and microsoft has figured that out. With the Windows updates once you access the microsoft website to check for updates they validate your license key. If they suspect it to be illegal you won't be able to get updates anymore. If you think its legal, you are going to have to take that up with Microsoft or the company that sold you the windows system.

If your Windows is LEGAL, call Microsoft at (800) 936-5700 (not verified), it's always free for Windows Update issues.
If illegal, you're on your own.
