Typically it is only 10% of what you publisher gets for selling your book and many time its cost you thousands of dollars for editing an marketing up front. It is extremely rare that a Stephen King or J.K Rowling situation happens.

If you want to write for a living or even use writing to supplement you income you must look at writing as a BUSINESS. Do your research seriously and toughly.

It depends on the publisher, how many books you've published in the past, the quality of the writing, whether it will be marketed as a best-seller, etc...

Stephen King made 8-12k$ for Carrie, and it was a HUGE success. Granted, that's not sci-fi, but consider the person. He now makes millions on his book deals, so start small and go from there.
