minor boys who have sex with minor girls do NOT get charged with staututory rape either. Only whenb someone is older than the age of majority with a minor. Gender is not figured in;.

Brian, that is only in the states that do not have parental notification laws. If the state has those laws, the girl is required to get parental permission.

oh, and a guy DOES get a girl pregnant. And the girl is the one who gets pregnant. It isn't SEXIST, it is REALITY.

Jay, perhaps the reason a girl is not required to notify her parents if she decides to keep it, is it is virtually impossible to hide a full term pregnancy.

I believe it's probably because, sadly, you don't always know who the father is but you always know the mother. It's just biology, not gender discrimination.

I agree, it should be both parents' notification, if at all. Else, it sends the message that young women should be held more accountable for their behavior than young men, and perpetuating the unequal societal expectations that already exist.

I think you would do better to split those two questions, there's more than enough to say on both sides whether or not the father should have a voice in an abortion decision.

These two things are somewhat the same and somewhat very different.

Your first question, parental notification... as a matter of "the right thing," I do believe that a male that creates a pregnancy should take responsibility, including having his parents notified (if a minor). In terms of law, no... And here's why...

There is no law that says that a pregnant girl needs to notify her parents of her pregnancy. It's all about the abortion.

That being the case, nothing changes with the male between having the baby/having an abortion. As unfair as it may seem, the female has two acts: getting pregnant and having an abortion. For the male, it's one act: causing the pregnancy. After that, unless he's going the abortion, he's taking no additional acts.

On your second question... I think it's the right thing to involve the male in the decision. However, ultimately, it's the woman's body and she has to have the final say.

I think the parental notification laws say the girl must notify her parents before she gets an abortion. I think that's reasonable.
In some places, parental permission is needed to give a girl an aspirin or a tattoo. Why should abortion be different?

But it wouldn't make sense to require her to notify the boy's parents before she gets an abortion.

If there was a practical way to notify a boy's parents that he had got a girl pregnant, I'd be in favor of it.

I think boys should have to tell thier parents that they got a girl pregnant, but perhaps only so that the parents can talk to the boy about his options for birth control ect so that it doesnt happen again.

As far as men having a say on weather or not a women has an abortion, I think that should be entirely up to the women. I do not think that any man should ever have final say so in what a women does with or to her body regardless of the fact that it is his child. But I do think that the father should be notified if it is being aborted. Maybe then he would be more careful about the decisions he makes.

The key word is minor. Second the boy does not take any further acts requiring medical proceedures or interventions. Third the girl is also a minor. Laws are there to protect minors. The parents have a right to fight it out in court because they are the gaurdians. If someone does not like a law, step up and do something about it. That what the court system is for.

For the girl it is an actual health issue. It is the only medical procedure that doesn't require parental approval. the parents really should be informed as it may impact future medical treatment or even cause a future medical problem that the parents may have to deal with.

Actually parental notification means just that, notification. I don't think there is a state that requires parental "permission" for a minor to have an abortion.

I think that the boys should have the same ramifications as the girls. Yes, they should notify their parents too.

I think that ideally the decision about the unborn child should be made by both of the people who were involved in the act of making a baby. But sometimes, lets say the girl wants to give the baby up for adoption. The boy could say I want to keep it and have my family raise it. But the girl knows that is not a good family, and wants her child to be able to be raised by a good, decent family. So she is forced to keep her baby rather than give it up for adoption so that the boy's family can't have it. In that case, I think it would be better if the boy's family had never known about the pregnancy.

abortion to me should not be an option of convenience to try and pretend like it never happened, or try to avoid the consequences.

this all hinges on the last part of the question. there is definately a double standard for the sexes regarding abortion. both ways. should a man have a say in whether or not to get an abortion? tuff q! he should have some input, especially when it effects his life as well. as far as minors go...its a hard q to answer, how do we know who the father is? should we consider the morning after pill as abortion?

If we want to get into a question of inequality, we should start with the abortion part of the question. Men are subject to one of the worst double-standards in the history of this country. It's a woman's 'right' to choose'. It's a woman's 'choice'. Unfortunately, it's a man who foots the bill. Sorry, but as long as she can dodge responsibility for getting pregnant by getting an abortion (which I would have NO say in), why the hell should I be held responsible for getting her pregnant with 18 freaking years of child support? Either give us a say in the decision, or live with your own consequences. After all - "It's your body".

Yep, I think that both parties need to be informed. However, I never think that abortion is the answer to an unplanned pregnancy. Adoption is the only option. That way, the mother won't carry around the emotional scars knowing that she killed her baby, and the boy will see that the sex act requires maturity and responsibility. Abortions don't make the girl pregnant. They make her the mother of a dead baby (that she had party in killing).
Absolutely he should have a say in whether or not she gets an abortion. It is his child, too.
