I'm confused.

My mother says if the needle or wedding ring, when placed on top of the abdomen, goes round in circles its a girl and if it swings from left to right its a boy.

However I just looked it up on a few sites on the internet and some say its vice versa.

Mine is going around in circles and my mum believes its always right. She said it has never been wrong on anyone she has done it too.

Can anyone confirm this old wives tale for me please?

You guys are not understanding my question!!!!! It's so annoying!!! Where did I say I believed it???? Where does it say that??????? I'm only asking which way is it supposed to be? Circles - boy or girl? Left to Right - boy or girl?? There's no harm in a bit of fun!!! Jeez!!!

Ha ha, yeah

supposedly circles is boy and back and forth is girl.

Don't let them bully you, I haven't had my 20 week scan yet and I'm trying to figure out what I'm having and i"m doing all the same things.

I'm worried though. According to all the old wives tales I must be having a hermaphrodite. Because half of them point to boy and half of them point to girl. Even with the chinese gender charts, I'm like right on the border between boy and girl and some sites say boy, some sites say girl. My friends all say boy, but my husband's in the navy and works in the radar room, adn the theory is that the radar kills off the boy sperm. So that would make it a gir.

I really am thinking that it's a strong possibility that it will be a hermaphrodite. just kidding but I'm really waiting for that ultrasound.

I don't really believe in old wives tales but I can't prove their wrong either and I used to try it out for fun when I was pregnant but I can't remember which way round was for a boy or a girl (it's such a long time ago!). The best way is to ask if they can tell you the sex of the baby when you have a scan. It doesn't really matter what sex it is does it though just as long as it's healthy and I always found the not knowing what sex it was, used to be one of the exciting bits of having a baby! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and delivery and I hope you have a beautiful healthy baby! All the best!

I'm afraid it is an old wives tale and that there are other signs which are far more relible. I wouldn't go choose blues/pinks just yet.

If your mum has been acurrate up till now, it is more likely that she has observed other signs and unconciously made the ring move the way her sub-conscious is telling her. Have some fun and try to guess but don't put to much on it. Babies are great at surprising. My brother should have been a girl and should have been a boy by all the old methods.

The old wives tales are just a 50/50 guess. The wedding ring thing, the heart rate thing, the carrying high/low thing-they are all just a guess. All of the wives tales indicated a boy for me, and I have a lovely little girl. The wives tales are fun to play with, but not accurate.

Hello, don't worry about those stupid answers you are getting, I know, it's just a bit of curious fun. My friend did this to me during my first pregnancy, not over my abdomen but just over my palm. The ring went round in circles with me. My friends theory was the same as your mums, if the ring goes round in circles it's a girl, if it swings from side to side, it's a boy. Sure enough, when I delivered my baby, which I had a feeling through my whole pregnancy, I was having a boy, I gave birth to a beautiful baby "GIRL". The ring theory worked. My friend also did this to another friend of mine who was pregnant at the same time as me, and it swung from side to side. Sure enough she had a boy. I don't know how reliable this technique of predicting a baby's sex is, but I know it definitely worked for me. I am also pregnant at the moment, and couldn't resist, holding the ring over my palm, again it went round in circles, so another girl. Good luck with your pregnancy, and it won't matter what you have, you will love, cherish and adore your wee bundle. All the best.

I've never heard this old wives' tale before however it would make sense to me that your mother is right. Imagine the needle/ring is drawing a picture in the air. If it is circling it is drawing the picture of a vagina and if it is moving back and forth it is drawing a picture of a penis.
That's just my guess but it would make the most sense.

:)

I'm laughing to myself because I remember this tale and having fun with it. Your mom is right about the circle and the swinging however the only way to determine the sex of the child is through ultrasound. Best of Luck with your baby to be.

Apparantly the majority are wrong, but if you think about it they do have a 50% chance of being right!!
I've heard that this one has been proven to be correct though, find out your babys heart rate (either ask at your appointment or get one from the store) if its over 140 beats a minute its a girl or if its less its a boy. It worked for me

its exactly what you say it is. An old wives tale. Therefore, complete nonsense.
Different people will have different versions of the right and wrong way to do this as a result of it not being true.

I've always heard it the way your mom says.

I was told I'm having a boy by the ultrasound, and mine swings side to side, so I'd say it's right for me too.

Also, not to say it's true or anything, but my friends and I have always used those Chinese gender predictor calendars. For all 12 of the babies we tried it on (including what mine should be) it was always correct. Here's a link for you - just for fun ;)
