Soccer here is considered as exciting as watching paint dry. Many deride baseball for the same thing - soccer is considered worse. It has no history here. I actually heard a sportscaster say that the reason the world likes soccer more than any other sport is because they don't know any better in what is essentially a sissy sport. Even in baseball a pitcher can hurl a 90 mph fastball at a guy's head intentionally and not get the equivilant of a red card (thought sometimes they do get penalized). While there are hockey and basketball leagues in Europe it's nothing compared to soccer and that head start soccer had is hurting them and the sport becomes part of the culture. Same here as even hockey in North America is several times larger than soccer will be for the next decade at least. In Canada forget it, we might as well have a hockey stick on the flag instead of a maple leaf.

The American public may lack the passion, but certainly not the players. If they don't win anything, its not because of passion, but because of the lack of skill as opposed to the stronger teams.
Then again there are only a handful of European teams that have won a "major" competition anyways, so you can ask the same question about teams like Spain or Portugal and why they have yet to win the World Cup.
Also, US has won the Gold Cup many times, so if you don't consider that major then you can't consider the Copa America or the Euro Cup major.

USA is relatively new to soccer, but they are improving all the time. Won't be long before the will field a competitive team. And look at all those countries in Europe and South America who never won anything mayor yet, and they been playing for ever.

I don't agree with you.
In the past decade , Futbol has made great strides in North America......and its just a manner of time before that passion your talking about will be instituted into this sport.
That timespan can be a generation or two.....kids who are growing up having this sport as an option to put into their lifestyle....Will not happen overnight.
But this will only happen if the league like the MLS and the US Soccer team make positive strides.....and I think it seems like they are heading in that direction.

Absolutly probably not Canada just because they havent been anywhere near successful in Soccer...But for the USA yes...The united states has the most Younger People playing than any other country in the world...so if it stays this way there will eventually be players good enough to match up with the Itailians, French, Brazillians, Argentines, English and German. just give them a few decades :).

the thing is, in the US especially, there are many more sport choices for American kids than European and other international kids. someday, way down the line, the USA mens soccer team could win something big...at least lets hope so

For the earnings of people who do no longer stick to your link, the substance of the information tale is Obama's appointment of Ron Kirk as commerce chief. The appointment of Ron Kirk is SURREAL while taken inclusive of Obama's marketing campaign grants approximately NAFTA and customarily approximately convalescing the lives of standard human beings. If that appointment isn't adequate to convince those that Obama is a CON, no longer something would be. They (Obama and his handlers and insiders) have become so smug they are not even pretending to be on the side of the hassle-free human beings to any extent further - as further and further appointments are made that needless to say practice the status quo will proceed ON ALL FRONTS. to respond to your question .... the Obama administration will stick to a similar direction because of the fact the Bush administration because of the fact they answer to a similar masters - the banksters and the corporate elite. to shop u.s., human beings might desire to awaken in time for 2012 to vote in shape-friendly politicians. it would desire to already be too previous due. Can midsection type u.s. stay to tell the tale yet another 4 years of the status quo? possibly yet its questionable. Can midsection type u.s. stay to tell the tale yet another 8 YEARS of the status quo. honestly no longer.

Well we do have baseball, our version of football, hockey (canadians are big on hockey), basketball and a few other sports we enjoy before soccer, that could be one reason. Another is since it's not big no one invests too much money into it therefore they don't produce too many good players.

its not really passion that we lack. its talent to compete with the likes of Brazil, England, Germany, Argentina, France, Italy that we lack. when we upset portugal in 2002, that was probably our best showing. if we can just make it out of the group stages at WCs, i say that is victory.
