I have the kind of windows that crank open, but on almost half of them the crank is breaking and won't shut the windows. It will open them, but shutting the windows involves pulling the screen off and manually pulling the window shut. Is there an easy fix for this, or a way to buy and install new cranks? My landlord won't replace the windows.

Thanks!

If you have a lease which says the landlord handles repairs, he/she should repair or replace the windows. Or at the very least the cranks.

We just bought a house with similar windows and some of them have similar problems. My husband says they can be fixed. It sounds like the crank is not totally a loss because it can open the window just fine. Call a local hardware store and see what they recommend. Or go national and call a "Big Box Store" (Home Depot, Lowe's) to see what they say.

Yea you need new cranks. But take the old ones off and take them with you cause there are different lengths and right and left opening ones that make this a pain to do. I fixed all of our window cranks at a rental we had and it’s not that hard it’s just the multiple trips to the hardwood store that took the longest.

Sure. You can replace the whole mechanism. Just go to a hardware or home improvement store like Lowes or Home Depot. Find somebody who looks like he knows what you're talking about and tell him what you want.

I've done it, and it's not hard. You've got anywhere from ten minutes to half an hour's work ahead of you depending on how hard it is to get the old screws out.
